Field Service Technician/Electrical Testing Technician

The successful candidates will join a crew that performs testing and maintenance on medium and high voltage systems. Travel is part of the job.

Responsibilities include electrical acceptance and maintenance testing of medium and high voltage apparatus as well as all aspects of AC and DC control circuit verification. Additional responsibilities include testing of power transformers, medium and high voltage circuit breakers, instrument transformers, switches, reactors, capacitor banks, grounding systems, switchgear, cables and protective relays and control systems. As abilities grow, the successful candidates will write formal test reports for clients. The successful candidates will be responsible for maintaining equipment and shipping and receiving equipment.

Field Service Technicians travel to customer sites (Utility, Industrial & Commercial) to inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start-up and collect data of low, medium and high voltage (480 Volt to 345kV) electrical systems.

Instrument transformer tests – CT’s, PT’s, CCVT’s
Power transformer testing – Doble, TTR, Insulation Resistance, Winding Resistance, SFRA, etc.
Cable testing – Tan Delta, VLF, DC Hipot
Circuit breaker inspection, maintenance, testing and troubleshooting
Low, Medium and High voltage switchgear and circuit breaker testing
Battery Testing including cell voltage, strap resistance, overall battery bank voltage, specific gravity and load bank tests

 

Required Qualifications

  • Understanding of electrical knowledge and theory
  • NETA &/or NICET Certified a plus
  • Strong mathematical aptitude with fluid understanding of algebra and trigonometry a plus
  • Ability to understand, troubleshoot and diagnose issues in simple to complex electrical systems
  • Ability to read, understand and create technical diagrams & drawings
  • Ability to utilize high voltage testing equipment, meggers, multimeters, Doble, timers, DLRO, hi pot, VLF…
  • Ability to work on a wide array of electrical equipment including transformers, motor control centers, circuit breakers, protective relays, switchgear, disconnect switches, grounding systems, UPS systems, chiller systems, etc.
  • Leadership qualities and experience – desire to lead in the future
  • Ability to converse and work with client site engineers and personnel, as well as third party contractors during field service
  • Initiative and organizational skills
  • Ability to demonstrate a successful career with past experience
  • Ability to crawl, climb, stand and lift 70 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Satisfactory substance/alcohol screening test and background check
  • Willing to occasionally work out of town
  • Availability for a varying schedule – occasional emergencies, weekend work, overtime and evening work
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Strong written and verbal communication – ability to draft detailed reports that include a summation of services, equipment identification, details of issues and repair recommendations and test results
  • OSHA 10 &/or 30HR training preferred but not required

Relay Technician / P&C Engineer

 

Job Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relay and other equipment.
  • Functional testing for protection and control circuitry associated with transmission lines, HV bus, transformer, circuit breaker, feeder, reactors, and capacitor banks.
  • Experienced with SEL microprocessor relays
  • Experienced with GE microprocessor relays
  • Experienced with multiple styles of electro-mechanical and solid state relays
  • Accurately reviewing, documenting, and submitting test reports used for client reporting and regulatory purposes.
  • Interpret one-line, three-line, wiring, schematic diagrams, communication configurations with ability to recognize and bring attention to discrepancies.
  • Accurately completes time and expense reports along with maintaining good condition of assigned company equipment.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Ideal candidate will have 5+ years experience in the electrical testing industry with a focus working with protection and control equipment, RTU’s, and telecom with HV utility, co-op, power generation and municipal clients.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Technology in similar discipline, or Technical school diploma, or military experience in either Army Prime Power or Navy Nuclear electrical program.
  • Experience with transmission and distribution relays to include SEL, GE, ABB, and Westinghouse.
  • Experience with substation RTU’s, communication processors, and telecom equipment.
  • Experienced with scoping, scheduling, and budgeting process for protection and control.
  • Experience with project management of protection and control teams working in HV substations for utility clients.
  • Familiar with NERC requirements.

Requirements:

  • Pass pre-employment drug test, and periodic unannounced drug tests
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check with 7 year history
  • Have a valid drivers license and meet minimum motor vehicle insurability standards
  • Take and pass 10 &/or 30 hour OSHA training
  • Ability to work in a field environment subject to changing outdoor conditions
  • Work overtime as needed and willingness to travel extensively to client work locations
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
